what
is spread betting?
Contrary to popular understanding and to the often misleading
financial media a Spread Bet is by definition a type of Contract
For Difference i.e. it is a contract with an entity (broker)
to exchange the difference between the opening value and the
closing value of an instrument, whether that instrument be
an individual equity, a bond, a future or option etc.. It
is also probably the most popular method of trading in the
U.K. for the private investor.
Where
a spread bet differs from what we conventionally know as a
CFD is that all your borrowing/lending charges and any dividends
due over the period are wrapped up into the opening quote
(the Spread) along with the brokers commission.
The Spread Bet itself has a limited lifespan and this all
entitles the CFD to be classed as a Bet and therefore
free from Capital Gains Tax, the major advantage of Spread
Betting.
